Eco Moto Winterization Tips

Winter time is upon us, and it’s time to store your bike while you are not riding. By not riding your bike for a few months over the winter, it can create expensive problems that can be remedied by following a few simple procedures. We want your bike to be drivable when you are ready to fire it back up, and avoid frustrating costly maintenance.

The first step is to change your engine and transmission oil, along with a new oil filter if your scooter is equipped with a filter. By performing this necessary oil change, moisture will not rust the piston rings to the cylinder wall.
The next precaution is to protect the inside of the fuel tank from rusting, and to keep the gas from going bad. First, fill the tank to the top with fuel that has been treated with a fuel stabilizer. We recommend Sta-Bil, which you can get purchase at our store, or Eco Moto online. You will want to run your scooter for several minutes at idel, or go for a quick ride. This will ensure that the stabilized fuel will make it’s way through your carbeurator to reduce any chance of leaving any untreated gasoline in your system.

Your next step is to keep your battery charged.  Since batteries will discharge at nearly 1% a day, it is necessary to keep your battery charged throughout the winter months. The best way to care for your stored battery is to hook a Battery Tender or other “smart” style charger to your battery. This type of charger will turn itself off and on  as it automatically detects the batteries charge state. You can pick up a Battery Tender at Eco Moto’s shop, or at Eco Moto online.

If you have cold winters and a liquid cooled scooter, you should make sure your coolant has enough anti-freeze in it to keep the system from freezing. By not having enough anti freeze in your coolant, you can crack a cylinder head which will be very expensive to repair.
By taking these precautions you will ensure your bike is ready to roll in springtime. We recommend you call Eco Moto to schedule a winterization special. We have specials starting at just $59.99! Feel free to email any questions to service@ecomoto.net
